Your ABCD guide on how to enjoy your renovation

A

Accessories

life’s too short so let’s start with dessert

OR IN OUR CASE...ACCESSORIES

Accessories are the most fun part of the whole design process. They add color, texture, humor and let you show off your personality. Naturally, you would think that this stage comes at the end of the whole reno when all the “Big” decisions have already been made, built and delivered.

And you would be right… except for certain situations where I would recommend to start with the accessories. Sometimes a client comes to me with a piece they inherited, or a piece that has special meaning to them and they want to showcase it in the room.

Some clients have special and expensive paintings or sculptures that they want to display. In such cases it would be wise to start the planning process by taking these accessories into account and planning around them, with them being the star of the room. Let them shine!
In this way you will enjoy purposefully designing that room and will be excited to see the final product with your accessories shining out as opposed to stressing where you are going to put them at the end.

B

Budget

Keep calm and don’t worry about the budget

The “B” word! The biggest stress in any renovation. The way to avoid this stressful issue, and enjoy your renovation process, is by planning ahead and being realistic. Planning ahead: first make sure you have the money ready and available (duhh!) not tied up in stock, real-estate, “Someone owes me, I’ll be getting the money soon”…. All these things only add to your stress. In the initial stages of the reno you will be paying all the big ticket items, giving tradesmen down payments, so money must be available.

Be realistic: in any situation it is always wise to leave some money aside for unexpected eventualities … People usually set 10-15% aside…. I would recommend to be realistic and set aside 30-40%. Last but not least… Don’t compare! Very often clients that have come from a different country tend to compare prices with their home country. Don’t. Every country has its pros and cons and that goes for prices too. The less you compare the happier you will be. “Comparison is the thief of joy” ….And we want you to enjoy the process.

C

Craftsmen

QUALITY ISN'T EXPENSIVE IT'S PRICELESS

The key to any successful renovation is finding the right team. There are without doubt many talented craftsmen and tradies out there, but finding the right one for your project is paramount to the success and enjoyment of your renovation. Finding the right person to work with is very much like finding the right house or the right spouse… You have to get “The feeling”. But…And this is a big one…Don’t rely solely on your feelings, ask for recommendations, request pictures of their work. See if they arrive on time to meetings, send you the things they promised on time. Do they return your calls?

All these are very important traits when dealing with craftsmen and tradies.

The one thing I do (in addition to everything I already mentioned) is I make sure they have the same core values that I have towards my clients. I make sure they are honest, understand the financial stress my clients are under and respect the clients’ opinions and desires. Once you have found that right person to work with… You will absolutely enjoy the process.

D

Decisions and timing

to improve your life be ready to make new choices and decisions

Decisions, decisions decisions…
During the renovation process you will have to make countless decisions and fast. I would recommend that you find someone you trust to help you with this. Someone who has your best interest at heart and wants to see this project succeed…someone like…Me!
Don’t stress all the big decisions, you can always change things in your home. Some clients say “Omg! But this will be my forever kitchen…What do I choose??” Don’t stress! Most people change their decor every 10 years. You are also not the same person you were years ago…We could all do with a bit of a revamp after 10 years.
So, let yourself enjoy the process now… And worry about the future later!

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…TIMING IS EVERYTHING!
ONLY… THERE IS NO EASY TIMING TO RENOVATE. YOU JUST NEED TO JUMP INTO IT, AS LONG AS YOU ARE PREPARED AND ORGANIZED AND READY TO CREATE YOUR DREAM HOUSE AND ENJOY THE PROCESS ALONG THE WAY!
